LEGACY
The Making of the Eritrean Constitution
The Eritrean Constitution is an important achievement of the Eritrean people in general and the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) in particular.

It was drafted and adopted at a time when Eritrea was still recovering from a 30-year war of independence. The fact that the Eritreans were able to come together and agree on a common set of principles and values, as enshrined in the Constitution, is a testament to their resilience and determination to build a better future for their country.

This important document still represents a symbol of hope and unity for the Eritrean people.

SUPERMACY
A Country of Laws
The Constitution enshrines the principle of the rule of law, which means that all people are subject to the law and that the law is applied equally to everyone.

The Constitution guarantees a wide range of human rights, including the right to life, liberty, and security of person; the right to freedom of expression, opinion, and assembly; the right to freedom of religion; and the right to equality before the law.

The Constitution separates the powers of government into three branches: the executive, the legislative, and the judiciary. This separation of powers helps to ensure a system of separation of powers with checks and balance.

TRANSITION
Incumbent and Peaceful Transition
The Eritrean Constitution is a well-written and progressive document that guarantees a wide range of fundamental rights and freedoms to its citizens. While the Constitution has not been implemented, it remains an important blueprint for a more democratic and just Eritrea.

Awareness: It is important that the younger generation is educated in the history and status of the Constitution. Public education and awareness campaigns can be conducted inside Eritrea and in the Diaspora.

Implementation: Identify the steps that could be taken to prepare the the country  towards a smooth and peaceful transition such as establishing a constitutional implementation commission, reviewing and amending existing laws and regulations, training government officials.

Collaboration: It is also important to ensure that the implementation of the Constitution is inclusive and participatory.  A successful implementation will require a sustained effort from all stakeholders, including the government, civil societies, and the people of Eritrea.
